Yes, you can have a unique domain name direct to your CatholicWeb site. Just click on Website Accounts and then Domain Registration within your Member Console. The cost is $14.95 per year, including transfers. Click here for more information on Domain Name registration.

Important

As of October 28, 2006, transfers of your .com, .net, and .org domains will require a transfer authorization key (EPP) for each name being transferred to or away from our domain registrar. EPP transfer authorization key codes are generated by your current registrar. You may have to contact your current registrar directly and verify some of the following listed items.

The initial procedure for transferring domains is as follows:

Transfer verification must be made to the gaining registrar by the domain’s registrant and/or administrative contact(s).

The e-mail address on record for the domain names Administrative contact and/or Technical contact must be correct and working.

The domain must be at least 60 days old

Domain must be in “ACTIVE or OK” status, not a "locked" status.

If a domain is transferred between registrars, ICANN's Transfer Policy states no re-transfer of the domain is permitted for 60 days from the date the transfer was complete, except in the case of dispute or legal proceedings.

Then, October 28, 2006, all registrar transfers will additionally require the "transfer authorization key" or "EPP key" for each domain name being transferred.

Over the past few years we have observed companies not affiliated with CatholicWeb.com send official looking invoices to unsuspecting customers for renewal of their domain names. These same companies charge over double what CatholicWeb charges (up to $35 per year).
Domain Name Registration of America, Liberty Domains, and other American sounding companies have been reported sending these types of invoices.

We want all our customers to be made aware of this practice, and that any domain name renewal notice should be coming from CompBiz, Inc., the owner and technology company behind CatholicWeb.com, and/or Enom, Inc., the official domain name registrar of both CompBiz and CatholicWeb. Domain renewals are sent automatically to the email address on record before a domain name expiration date and will always originate from domains @ compbiz.net.

Some of these companies will also try to get CatholicWeb clients to buy new domain names with different extensions (such as .info). Please do not fall for what appear to be scams towards unsuspecting domain name owners.

There are three main variants of this scam:

1) Official-looking invoices via snail mail notification.

2) Phone calls.

3) Email notices.

1) Official-looking invoices via snail mail notifications.

Customers are receiving official-looking invoice notifications for many of their domain names from a company that has a very generic sounding name and has an American flag on their envelope. We happen to know that this is not the company that is our primary registrar, so we throw these away.

We did take a look at one of these deceptive letters, though, and it looks just like a bill. It also implies that if you don't renew with them, you'll lose your domain name.

What to do: If a notice comes from an unknown company, do not respond
-- just throw it out.

2) Phone calls. This past week we received a call from a domain registration company that first tried to verify the contact person for the domain name. Once they confirmed the contact person, they then wanted to put through one of their agents who had "some very important update information regarding our domain name."

When we asked what this was about, the caller said she didn't know, but that we needed to give her our fax number for some very important info so we wouldn't lose our domain name.

When we said that we wouldn't give her the fax number and that we wanted to talk with someone who did know (since she claimed to just be the receptionist), we were then told by the new person that we could now get one of our domain names with a .info extension.

When we said we weren't interested, the caller asked several times:
"Do you understand then that you can lose your domain name?" His deceptive point was that we could lose the .info version of the domain name -- but he strongly implied (and almost said) we would lose our .com domain name. When we asked for his name and phone number, he hung up.

What to do? Immediately ask for the caller's name, phone number, company name, and city and state they are calling from. Most will hang up. If they provide the information, you can ask them if they currently are your domain registrar (you can check this out from your prior bills). If they are not, you most likely do not want to talk with them.

If you choose to hear them out, realize that they are probably using high-pressure sales tactics -- you will not lose a domain name by not transferring it to another registrar. The primary way you lose a domain name is if you don't pay your renewal bill on time.

3) Email notices. These are the most common domain name renewal scams.
There are many variants of this scam.

Perhaps the worst one is when they include a Web address (URL) for you to get more information, but in reality, they have programmed that URL to function the same way as if you went through the process of agreeing to transfer your domain name. They then transfer your domain name to their company as registrar, and claim that you have requested this transfer.

What to do? Be careful. Check your records to verify the company (CatholicWeb.com or CompBiz, Inc.) that you registered your domain name with. If another company solicits you, ignore it. Don't click on the URLs of other solicitations. Don't pay phony looking invoices.

Note: CatholicWeb and CompBiz will send you notices when it's time to renew. Remember: be very careful. You don't want to lose your domain name, and you don't want to transfer it to an unscrupulous company.

When transferring .org domain names, special procedures are required by ICANN and the Public Interest Registry service, both governing bodies of all domain name registries handling .ORG domain names. When you desire to transfer a .ORG domain name from your registry to the CatholicWeb.com domain name registry, you must send an e-mail to admin@compbiz.net (the technical team and developer for CatholicWeb) requesting they initiate your .ORG domain name transfer. Along with your e-mail request, you must include your .ORG domain name "EPP Authorization Key Code." This key is also referred to as an Authorization Code, Secret Password, etc. by some registrars. The key must be obtained directly from your existing registrar and will be a series of numbers and letters (i.e. agf456ydt13). Because domain name registries prefer you not transfer your domain name away from them, they do not make this EPP Authorization Key Code easily accessible. For example, if your current registrar is Network Solutions, you will have to telephone their support department, identify yourself, and ask for it. They will then e-mail it to the administrative contact e-mail address on record for the domain name.
